📋 Full Tour Itinerary & Experience

Phase 1: Through the Rose Valley and Across the Shipka Pass

Your adventure begins in the morning with a comfortable pick-up from Plovdiv. As we head north, you will gaze upon the beautiful green hills of Sredna Gora and pass through the world-famous Valley of the Roses. Soon, the impressive Stara Planina (Balkan Mountain range) rises before us like a magnificent stone wall stretching from west to east.
We will cross this geographic barrier via the famous Shipka Pass. The winding road offers breathtaking panoramic views, twisting through lush, centuries-old beech and oak forests, making the drive an experience in itself.

Phase 2: Step Back in Time at Etar Open-Air Museum

Once across the mountain, we arrive at the Etar Architectural and Historical Open Air Museum. This unique complex transports you directly into the Bulgarian National Revival era (18th-19th centuries). Walk down cobblestone streets flanked by authentic period houses, charming cafes, and active craft shops.
Etar is world-renowned for its water-powered industrial machinery. You will see authentic water mills, a historical sawmill, knife-sharpening facilities, and traditional woodworking shops. Watch master craftsmen at work in the blacksmith shop, copper workshop, and icon-painting studio, and perhaps purchase a unique, handmade Bulgarian souvenir.

Phase 3: Discover Veliko Tarnovo – The City of Kings

Next, we head to Veliko Tarnovo, the glorious capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom (12th-14th century). Celebrated as one of the most picturesque towns in Europe, Veliko Tarnovo is built on multiple steep hills, creating a dramatic landscape where houses seem stacked on top of one another. Below, the Yantra River carves beautiful, deep meanders through the rocks.
We will stroll through the old town, admiring the beautifully preserved 19th and early 20th-century architecture. Today, these historic buildings house cozy cafes, traditional restaurants, boutique hotels, and cultural museums.

Phase 4: The Legendary Tsarevets Fortress

The crown jewel of our tour is Tsarevets Hill, the heavily fortified medieval citadel that housed the royal palace and the patriarchate. Surrounded by thick stone walls restored in the 1970s, you will walk among the ruins of hundreds of residential buildings, ancient churches, and the execution rock.
We will ascend to the fully reconstructed Patriarchal Cathedral at the very top of the hill, which features unique, striking modern frescoes depicting Bulgaria's dramatic medieval history, before heading back to Plovdiv.
