Hike in the Rhodopes and the village with the cleanest air

A hike in the Rhodopes and a visit to a panoramic site in the village with the cleanest air on the Balkan Peninsula -

The Rhodope Mountains are perhaps the most beautiful and attractive destination for lovers of beautiful mountain views, walks in natural forests, fresh air and clear mountain rivers.

The Rhodopes are a mountain located in southwestern Bulgaria and are located on the territory of Bulgaria and Greece. About 20 percent of the mountain is on Greek territory and 80 percent is in Bulgaria. With its centuries-old forests, picturesque peaks, green meadows, dozens of caves and hundreds of small streams and rivers, the Rhodopes have inspired the inhabitants and, as well as ancient Greek poets and historians. Many ancient legends have taken place here, as well as scenes from Greek mythology. The Rhodopes are also home to the legendary Orpheus, who carried the sounds of his harp music deep into the mountain forests.

Today, there are ski centers in the Rhodopes, the largest being the Pamporovo resort, many traditional Bulgarian villages, opportunities for various types of tourism.

During this excursion, we will visit a village in the Rhodopes at an altitude of about 1400 meters above sea level, where a NASA satellite in the distant year 1995 established the cleanest air on the Balkan Peninsula. The village is now quite sparsely populated, but with its stone houses, steep streets, parked old cars and tractors, it seems to take us back to the middle of the 20th century.

After reaching the village along a 17-kilometer mountain road, which follows the curves of the mountain turn by turn, we go along a footpath and reach a specially built panoramic platform, from which an amazing view of the endless folds of the mountain hills and peaks is revealed. From below, in a narrow gorge, you can see the artificial dam Vača.

All this creates an unforgettable memory of greenery and water, wonderful mountain views, the aroma of herbs and crystal clear air.
On the way back, if desired, we can stop at a traditional restaurant, where we can try the famous Rhodope specialties, such as beans in a pot, Kaverma, Patatnik, Banitsa and others.
